Sphynx Cat Care: The Ultimate Guide to Grooming Your Hairless Best Friend

Sphynx cat care, a bath in mobile grooming van

Everyone thinks hairless cats are low-maintenance. As a mobile cat groomer let me tell you – a Sphynx Cat Care it’s the opposite.

We groom a lot of Sphynx cats in Beverly Hills, Encino, and Studio City, and they are the sweetest, warmest, most dog-like cats you’ll ever meet. But without fur, their skin does all the work – and it needs help.

Here’s what every Sphynx parent needs to know.

What Makes a Sphynx Cat So Different?

The Sphynx isn’t truly bald. Touch one and it feels like warm suede or a peach. Some have a little fuzz on their nose, toes, and that whip-like tail.

What to expect:

  • Wedge-shaped head with huge cheekbones
  • Lemon-shaped eyes that never miss anything
  • Giant bat ears – and yes, they get dirty fast
  • Muscular body with a cute pot belly
  • Warm skin – they run hotter than furry cats and are always looking for your lap, your laptop, or a blanket

Color? It’s in the skin. You can have a tabby Sphynx, solid black, white, tortie, pointed – all of them.

Personality: Why People Are Obsessed With Them

Sphynx cats are not aloof. At all. And Sphynx Cat Care is our specialty. Especially the ears, always need to be thoroughly and carefully cleaned.

They greet you at the door. They love strangers. They will sit on your keyboard during Zoom. They are cuddly because they are literally cold and want your body heat.

If you want a cat that acts like a velcro dog, this is your breed. If you travel a lot or want an independent cat, this is NOT your breed.

The Big Myth: Are Sphynx Cats Hypoallergenic?

No. And this is important.

Cat allergies aren’t from hair – they’re from a protein called Fel d1, found in saliva and skin oils. Sphynx cats make a LOT of skin oil, so they can actually trigger allergies more for some people.

Some allergy sufferers do better with them, but don’t get a Sphynx just for allergies.

How to Actually Care For a Sphynx Cat Skin

This is where we come in. No fur to absorb oil means you get that greasy, dark brown build-up in their folds.

1. Bathing – Weekly is Normal

Most Sphynx need a bath every 1-2 weeks with a gentle, hypoallergenic cat shampoo. No harsh human soap. Lukewarm water, quick but thorough, and dry them immediately – they get cold fast.

Skip baths and you’ll get that sticky feel and blackheads on their chin and tail.

2. Ears – The Wax Factory

No hair in the ears = no protection. They produce way more earwax than a normal cat. Wipe weekly with a vet-approved ear cleaner. If it smells or is dark brown/black, that’s vet time.

3. Nails and Folds

Oil and gunk collect under their nails and inside all those cute wrinkles. Clean nails and skin folds every bath. Otherwise you get infections.

4. Sun and Cold

They sunburn. Seriously. Don’t let your Sphynx sunbathe by the window for hours. And in winter in LA nights? They need a sweater. We see a lot of Sphynx in little shirts in Trousdale and Encino and we love it.

Common Health Issues in Sphynx Cats

We are groomers, not vets, but we tell every Sphynx owner this:

1. HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy): Heart disease is common in this breed. Up to 34% showed heart abnormalities in one study. Good breeders do yearly heart scans. If your cat gets tired fast or breathes heavy, see your vet.

2. Skin Sensitivity: Greasy skin, acne, and sunburn.

3. Cold & Respiratory Sensitivity: Kittens especially – that’s why reputable breeders keep them until 14 weeks.

Regular vet checks + regular grooming = a happy Sphynx.
